Due to this fact, the fish is uniquely adapted to very high external pressures and cannot survive in shallower depths. This is why, when reeling their catch in, fishermen are said to hear a distinct Pop! from deep under the lake as the fishes internal organs explode. Reports from deep-lake divers state that the distinct bug-eyed feature of this beautiful fish does not appear to be in evidence when encountering the fish in its natural habitat.
