Inbreeding is usually viewed negatively. The Volcano Creek Golden Trout might be the exception to the rule. All Goldens are thought to be beautiful, but this subspecies is the most striking! Their gold bodies are the perfect backdrop for crimson lines and a bright orange belly. Only averaging 8 inches in length, they fit snuggly in palm of any angler’s hand after reeling it in off the fly. Found only in the waters of the Volcanic Creek in California, their numbers are being affected by the state’s ongoing drought. So just reel in this one piece instead!
You want to hear a true Fish Tale? About 10,000 years ago, a vent in the ground spewed lava and separated the Volcano Creek from the South Kern. Golden Trout were prevalent in the Kern River, but now the species was divided. Both populations continued to evolve separately and now we have two pure subspecies of Goldens. Here at Gill McFinn’s, we think that the Volcano Creek Golden Trout are the clear cut evolution winners! Their prize – being depicted on this fishing Romper!
